Lilac print mid 1830's Romantic era gown

I am currently obsessed with the 1830's, in which so many fashion changes occurred within just one decade. This cotton gown demonstrates exactly how the huge gigot sleeves of the early decade, were moving gently downwards, with the vast fullness at the upper elbow. Now the sleeves below the shoulder are deeply pleated, with a ruched band just below, reflecting the remains of the 1820's 'padded' fashion, then as if by magic, the sleeves develop into the huge gigot shapes we know from earlier. The tiny bodice shaping is gorgeous, with a very wide boat neck, and we still find one pocket slit for the lady to wear a single pocket unseen as part of her underwear. Linen lined to the bodice and sleeves, with a deep cotton hem lining to the skirt, she is structurally unchanged.A romantic charmer!
  • CONDITION:

The gown requires several small repairs. Please contact Poppies Cottage for a full condition report. Luckily, there is a half belt of the same fabric which will be perfect for invisible repair work. Buttons require replacement - a small matter. Mainly, the sleeves are either gently faded or gently discoloured. In my experience, these printed gowns wash beautifully and so I recommend a very gentle, cool soak [advice will happily be sent on request]. The condition report provided on request will give full details of all the above.
